What We Do

Our Programs

Circular Economy & Green Jobs

Turning environmental waste into economic opportunities through sustainable recycling models. Conservation must be economically viable for local communities. HMEBE bridges the gap between environmental protection and the Blue Economy by integrating a circular model that transforms waste into wealth. Key Activities: Plastic Upcycling Hubs: Partnering with recycling enterprises to process collected river and ocean plastics into durable, marketable products. Green Job Creation: Providing sustainable, dignified income opportunities for local youth and women through organized waste collection and sorting networks. Eco-Entrepreneurship: Supporting small-scale community cooperatives that utilize recycled materials, fostering local financial independence.

Community-Led Marine & Beach Cleanups

Restoring critical coastal habitats and engaging local networks in active ocean stewardship. Our beaches and coastal waters are vital for biodiversity and local livelihoods. HMEBE mobilizes community-driven ecosystems to conduct systematic, data-backed coastal cleanups that restore marine environments. Key Activities: Systematic Coastal Cleanups: Organizing recurring beach restoration campaigns targeting critical marine habitats and turtle nesting grounds. Community Ocean Stewardship: Training local youth and fishing communities to lead conservation efforts, ensuring long-term project ownership. Marine Debris Tracking: Categorizing and auditing collected waste to provide local authorities with empirical data on plastic pollution trends.

River Interception & Source Prevention

Stopping plastic pollution at the inland source before it enters the marine environment. Up to 80% of marine plastic debris originates from inland rivers and urban drainage systems. HMEBE is establishing localized River Interception Programs along critical riverine pathways in the Horn of Africa. Key Activities: Deploying Tactical Trash Booms: Installing locally manufactured, wildlife-safe floating barriers to trap macro-plastics and debris in urban river channels. Upstream Waste Management: Partnering with municipal authorities to improve waste collection systems near riverbanks, preventing illegal dumping. Riparian Buffer Restoration: Planting native vegetation along riverbanks to filter runoff and mitigate soil erosion.

Voices from the Field

"

homebe.org didn't come with a plan. They came with questions. For the first time, our fishing village was seen as the experts — and the solutions we built have lasted because they were ours from the start.

The MPA program transformed our coastline from an overfished wasteland into a recovering ecosystem. Fish stocks are up 40%. My daughters now have a future in fishing — not in fleeing it.

As a government partner, homebe.org stands out — they build our capacity instead of replacing it. Our national ocean policy is stronger today because of their science and their trust in our leadership.
